Piccos Kitchen

A few weekends back I picked up my laughs-a lot-(mostly at herself) sister-in-law and eats-as-often-as-most-take-air brother from the airport. Looking for a place closish to the airport to grab some breaky I discovered Piccos Kitchen. I quite like the location of this little cafe; situated away from the busy 8th avenue cafe scene. This cafe does not look very inviting from the outside but as soon as you walk in it feels cosy. We were greeted, seated and offered menus. A quick glance at the menu and we decided.

My eats-as-often-as-most-take-air brother went with an iced coffee with ice cream, pure lemon juice (unconventional) and Eggs (poached) on Sourdough, house made beetroot relish ($13) with garlic mushrooms ($4) and an Italian sausage ($4.50). The friendly staff did not even bat an eyelid when he asked for the pure lemon juice. I never knew brother drank ice coffees; he and the sister-in-law never drink tea or coffee (not sure how they cope); he did say he was tired.

Brother enjoyed his meal, however now living over in the eastern states he and the sister-in-law couldn’t believe the prices. They were laughing at the cost of the children’s meals which if I can remember correctly were over $10 for a toasted sandwhich. The side dishes here at Piccos are on the pricer side ($4; $4.50).

My laughs-a lot-(mostly at herself) sister-in-law ordered the Traditional Organic Porridge, Rapadura, Rhubarb. We were both discussing what Rapadura was, and when the meal arrived quickly discovered it is a type of sugar- popular for its caramel flavour, fine grain and golden colour. When this meal came out the oats were huge- they looked like gigantic oats! The porridge was a very dark colour and actually didn’t look that appetising. The porridge was served in a bowl with the rhubarb on the side; quite a cute presentation. My sister-in-law tried the porridge first and commented that it was very sweet however when combined with the tartness of the rhubarb this balanced out some of the sweetness. My sister-in-law still found this quite sweet however.

I ordered the Eggs (poached) on Sourdough, house made beetroot relish ($13) with garlic mushrooms ($4). The bread they serve at Piccos is Loafers bread; one of my favourites; I ordered the grain sourdough to go with mine. All in all this meal was pleasant, however the beetroot relish didn’t do anything for me- brother agreed (as did sister-in-law who snared a bite of brothers; something I never thought I’d see the day of, eats-as-often-as-most-take-air-brother does not share his food- well he didn’t until sister-in-law came along)!!

We quite enjoyed my morning at Piccos, quiet location and nice food, despite being on the pricer side. I will defiantly be returning to try their lunch or dinner menu.
