Whirlwynd Cafe Restaurant, Manning

Today speed-eater bf and I met up with some of the family for a much needed catch up. I was feeling somewhat depleted after a 32km run yesterday…so was looking forward to a nourishing breakfast and some running talk with speed-eater’s brother who has been busting out some awesome times in his runs of late. The venue: Whirlwynd Cafe in Manning. This is a place speed-eater frequents regularly on a Saturday morning for breakfast with his best-mate. Despite my suggestions they should mix it up location wise (variety is as they say the spice of life) they are loyal regulars and like knowing that they get a quality breakfast every time (they did branch out on one particular weekend however this turned out to be a distasteous breakfast). Anyway after our breaky today I can see why they like this place. We had a booking and our table was all ready to go when we arrived with the high chair for please-one-more-cookie-nephew. This cafe has a modern and stylish feel about it as opposed to the more rustic look most cafes are going for now days. Orders are placed at the counter and despite it being quite busy drinks arrived promptly followed by meals not too long after.

Speed-eater-bf mixed things up today (he did venture to the cafe yesterday for his usual of eggs on toast with a side of bacon) and went for the Wyndy Muesli ($9.50) This was reported on the menu as hand-made and was served with natural yoghurt, fresh fruit and milk. The fruit was a mix of apple, strawberry and pear. It looked like a nice light breakfast.

I went with the Eggs on toast 9.50) scrambled with mushrooms ($3). This meal came with one thick slice of toast- you could add another piece of toast for an extra $1. One slice was the perfect portion with the generous serving of scrambled eggs. The eggs were pillowy goodness. I did have to add pepper and salt however so maybe a tad under seasoned however I do find I tend to like food on the saltier side when I am running big distances. What I especially loved about this dish was the mushrooms- they weren’t your normal button mushrooms; I think they might have been shiitake mushrooms? They were lovely.

Now speed-eater-bf is eclipsed in food eating quickness by his older brother – there is no other way to descibe his assault on food other than to call him attacks-food-ferociously. True to form his meal was demolished before I even had a chance to take a few mouthfuls (talking slows me down clearly). He ordered the What a Whirl big breakfast- crispy bacon, chipolatas, sautéed field mushrooms, slow roasted tomatoes, fried eggs, toast ($20.50). Quite the meal. Whilst his wife; eats-like-a-proper-lady ordered the fruit toast with butter ($5). It was thickly cut and looked full of sultanas yum!

Mr please-one-more-cookie-nephew got the kids pancakes. These looked beautiful; thick pancakes with maple syrup ($8). They stopped the little man in his tracks- although he did successfully manage to sneak some sausage from Dad’s plate; pancake, maple syrup and sausages an interesting combination. Bf’s Mum; the-very-good-cook ordered the Sautéed field mushrooms, poached eggs, Persian feta, rocket, toasted sourdough ($16.50) with a side of tomato ($2.50). This dish looked gorgeous.

Service was friendly and attentive. Beautiful meal and speed-eater-bf will be back next weekend- I might have to join too.
